Poland defence build‑up, NATO ties, Shield East
Overview
Poland’s modernization programme, launched in early June 2026, continues to expand its armed forces, NATO cooperation and support for Ukraine while confronting criticism over the pace of its Shield East border fortifications. The acquisition programme includes F‑35 fighters, Abrams tanks, K2 IFVs, K9 howitzers and HIMARS rockets. By late August 2026, the ‘Tarcza Wschód’ (East Shield) initiative has evolved into a broader allied effort. German Bundeswehr engineers, deployed since late June, have completed five weeks of work constructing trenches, barbed wire, and concrete anti-tank ‘hedgehogs’ to secure approximately 210 kilometers of the border with the Russian Kaliningrad region. This German contingent is expected to remain on-site until mid-October 2026, at which point it will be replaced by French forces. To build what officials describe as the largest land army in Europe, Poland is shifting its procurement strategy toward domestic and Central European suppliers, such as Germany’s Rheinmetall and the Czech company CSG, to ensure faster delivery. Defense spending for domestic and regional supplies has nearly quadrupled since 2022. Poland’s total defense spending has risen to nearly five percent of its economic output, with an expected 53 billion euros allocated for core defense needs in 2024. Long-term strategic goals include expanding the armed forces from the current 220,000 personnel to a target of 500,000 troops by 2039. In September 2026, Poland further expanded its international defense ties. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between CAE and WB Electronics to advance training for unmanned and autonomous systems. Additionally, a new MBDA missile logistics facility opened in Czosnów in collaboration with the United Kingdom to support the PILICA+ and NAREW air defence programmes. Following the 36th meeting of the Ramstein Group, Poland announced it is preparing a 50 million euro military aid package for Ukraine, specifically focused on air defense systems.
