Germany to establish first Bundeswehr drone regiment by 2027

Germany is establishing its first dedicated drone regiment within the Bundeswehr, a move intended to modernize the military in response to lessons learned from the war in Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the new unit is expected to begin formation in 2027, with an initial strength of approximately 350 personnel, eventually growing to 600 soldiers.

The regiment will be an independent structure focused on unmanned systems, including both aerial drones and unmanned ground vehicles. It is planned to operate with a range of up to 500 kilometers and will feature specialized capabilities, such as a company dedicated to electronic warfare and the use of loitering munitions (kamikaze drones).

Army Inspector General Christian Freuding stated that the regiment is intended to be fully operational by 2029. The unit will consist of five or six specialized companies, including a company for close-range combat, a long-range strike company, a drone defense company, and an electronic warfare company. Additionally, the regiment will house its own test and evaluation company to streamline development and operations. The new unit is expected to be integrated into the 10th Panzer Division, which includes the 45th Panzer Brigade currently stationed in Lithuania to strengthen NATO's eastern flank.
