Bundeswehr military modernization efforts

Overview

The German Bundeswehr is pursuing modernization efforts focused on digital and unmanned warfare capabilities.

In September 2026, the military began exploring market options from approximately 30 companies to develop sovereign, AI-driven software for real-time battlefield data analysis. This initiative seeks to create an alternative to US-based systems like Palantir to ensure operational sovereignty. A prototype is anticipated by the second quarter of 2027, with full operational capabilities expected by mid-2028. Key participants in this process include German firms such as Hensoldt and the startup Helsing, alongside French provider Chapsvision.

By October 2026, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced plans to establish the military’s first dedicated drone regiment by 2027. This unit, intended to adapt to modern combat realities and lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, will specialize in both aerial and ground-based unmanned systems, including reconnaissance and strike operations with ranges up to 500 kilometers.

Army Inspector General Christian Freuding stated that the regiment is intended to be fully operational by 2029. The unit will consist of five or six specialized companies, including capabilities for close-range combat, long-range strikes, drone defense, electronic warfare, and loitering munitions. The regiment is expected to grow from 350 to 600 personnel and will include its own test and evaluation company. The unit is slated for integration into the 10th Panzer Division, which includes the 45th Panzer Brigade currently stationed in Lithuania to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.
