Bungie projects largely canceled following Sony acquisition

Bungie was reportedly developing five to six different game projects during its expansion period, but most have since been canceled or failed to launch following Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition in 2022. According to reports from journalist Jason Schreier, Sony acquired the studio specifically to leverage its expertise in live-service gaming, yet many of the anticipated titles have fallen through.

Specific projects mentioned as canceled or discontinued include the mysterious IP Matter, Project Sunspot, and Project Payback. While some titles like the mobile game Destiny: Rising (developed with NetEase) and the shooter Marathon have moved forward, they have faced challenges. Marathon has reportedly seen declining player numbers, and the studio has undergone significant workforce reductions and leadership changes, including the departure of Marathon’s game director Joe Ziegler.

Bungie is currently attempting to stabilize through experimental modes and early-stage incubation for new projects, following a period of heavy investment that resulted in significant losses of time and resources.
