Bungie workforce and project count decline following Sony acquisition

Bungie has experienced a significant decline in both workforce and project volume since its acquisition by Sony in 2022. At the time of the takeover, the studio employed between 1,500 and 1,600 people. Current reports indicate the staff has shrunk to fewer than 500 employees.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reports that Bungie had between five and six different projects in development during the acquisition, many of which were live-service titles intended for Sony. While not all have been cancelled, several projects have been scrapped. Specifically, the mobile game Destiny Rising and the title Marathon have failed to attract buyers. Currently, Bungie's primary focus appears to be the continued support of Destiny 2 and the development of Marathon.
