Burgenland Energie launches citizen investment program
Burgenland Energie has introduced the ‘Bürger:innenbeteiligung 2026’ investment model, allowing residents in 31 municipalities to financially participate in renewable energy projects. The program offers investment packages of 500, 2,500, or 5,000 euros, providing a fixed annual return of three percent over a five-year term. Participants are guaranteed a 100 percent repayment of their initial investment at the end of the contract.
Investors acquire stakes in specific photovoltaic panels and wind park shares. The fixed annual remuneration is guaranteed regardless of the actual energy yield from the installations. Burgenland Energie, through its subsidiary BE Energy GmbH, remains responsible for the operation, maintenance, and insurance of the facilities.
This initiative supports Burgenland’s goal of achieving energy independence by 2030. Since 2021, the region has increased its self-generated energy share from approximately 50 percent to 75 percent of total demand. While the program aims to reduce reliance on energy imports, the ÖVP regional party has criticized the model for its limited scope, noting that only 31 out of 171 municipalities are eligible to participate.
