Burgenland renewable energy transition

Overview

A study by the Institut für Strategieanalysen (ISA) indicates high public satisfaction with the energy supply in Burgenland, Austria, with 94 percent of respondents rating it positively. This support aligns with the regional government’s goal to achieve energy independence by 2030 through increased domestic wind and solar power.

To further this transition, Burgenland Energie launched the ‘Bürger:innenbeteiligung 2026’ investment model. This program allows residents in 31 municipalities to invest in photovoltaic and wind energy projects with a guaranteed three percent annual return. While the region has increased its self-generated energy share from approximately 50 percent to 75 percent since 2021, the ÖVP regional party has criticized the new investment model for its limited scope, noting that only 31 of the 171 municipalities are eligible to participate.
