Burgenland officials revise proposed truck toll plan

The government of Burgenland, Austria, has announced plans to revise a proposed truck toll system following significant criticism from political opponents and business representatives. The original proposal, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, would have imposed usage fees on three state roads for vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons.

Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) stated that the new proposal aims to refine the legislation during the review process to ensure that transit and diversionary traffic are targeted, while protecting local businesses from undue financial burdens. The goal is to prevent heavy transit vehicles from damaging state roads without shifting maintenance costs to local taxpayers.

Opposition from the FPÖ has been sharp, with General Secretary Christian Hafenecker labeling the move as a failure and criticizing the potential for double taxation, noting that heavy vehicles already pay tolls on motorways. Critics highlighted that local companies, such as construction firms and beverage distributors, could face thousands of euros in additional annual costs. The Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Association have expressed a willingness to cooperate on finding a practical solution that maintains regional competitiveness.
