Burgenland to introduce truck tolls on state roads in 2027

The Austrian state of Burgenland plans to implement a new toll for heavy goods vehicles on three state roads starting January 1, 2027. The measure aims to fund road maintenance and safety, with provincial councilor Heinrich Dorner stating that those responsible for the wear and tear—freight and forwarding companies—should contribute more to the costs.

The toll will initially apply to 144 lane kilometers, specifically affecting the B16 in the Eisenstadt district, the B61a in Oberpullendorf, and parts of the B63 and B50 in Oberwart. The regulation targets vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons and is designed to comply with EU cost guidelines. Costs will be determined by factors such as axle count and pollutant levels.

Drivers can choose from daily, weekly, monthly, or annual vignettes. An annual vignette is expected to cost between 650 and 1,000 euros, while a daily vignette will range from approximately 14 to 17 euros. The state anticipates revenue in the mid-single-digit millions. Beyond financing, officials hope the toll will create a steering effect, encouraging heavy traffic to use higher-ranking roads.
