Aaron Farinacci charged with arson for Spokane's Old Trails wildfire

Aaron Farinacci, a 37‑year‑old Spokane resident, was arrested and charged with first‑degree arson for the Old Trails Fire that ignited on Aug. 1, 2026. In court filings he admitted planning the blaze for about two weeks, researching a weather app for high winds, low humidity and high heat, and constructing a time‑delay ignition device from notebook paper, matches, a cigarette and a rubber band.

The fire burned more than 3,200 acres, destroyed over 700 structures (some reports cite more than 850 homes), and forced between 60,000 and 67,000 residents to evacuate. No deaths or injuries have been confirmed. A witness, Paul Child, saw Farinacci kneeling near the ignition site with matches and a lighter. His bail was set at $2 million. Farinacci also has a prior manslaughter conviction.
