Germany burglary and arson incidents

Overview

In early August 2026 a wave of residential break‑ins and related crimes was reported across several German states, beginning with a garden house in Erfurt’s Am Galgenberg settlement being forced open with a lever‑type tool and set ablaze, causing damage exceeding €20,000. Similar burglaries were recorded in Thuringia, Rhineland‑Palatinate, Baden‑Württemberg and North‑Rhine‑Westphalia, often targeting homes, sheds, a restaurant, a gaststätte and an evangelical church.

Later in the week, police noted a broader pattern of offences. In Erlangen a 25‑year‑old parcel deliverer was assaulted and verbally abused by a 62‑year‑old suspect. In Eisenach, thieves entered a school annex and stole pipework worth about €1,000. Volkersheim saw vandalism of a sports‑hall kiosk with swastika graffiti and broken windows. Bad Sassendorf residents discovered a ransacked house entered through a cellar window. Obertshausen authorities suspect two deliberately set fires on fields near a cemetery, while the Harz region experienced multiple intentional blazes on forest land, a railway platform and a historic building. In Lauterbach, burglars exploited damage from a major town fire to steal jewellery from a ruined multi‑family house.

Cross‑border, the Kantonspolizei St. Gallen arrested two Algerian men after a break‑in at a petrol station and nearby shop in Switzerland. On 5 August 2026 the suspects were found sleeping on a meadow near the gas station, with cigarettes, drinks and food taken during the theft, confirming their involvement.

Authorities continue to urge residents to secure premises and report suspicious activity.
