Burgundy region's red wine vintages and color naming clarified
Recent red wine vintages from Burgundy show marked differences due to climate variations. Pinot noir, the sole red grape of the region, reacts strongly to temperature, rainfall and sunshine during the growing season, producing distinct profiles each year. The 2015 vintage, characterized by a warm and sunny season, yielded rich, structured wines with pronounced fruit maturity, while the 2018 vintage, marked by hot conditions and high sunlight, produced powerful, opulent wines with higher alcohol levels.
In English, the term "burgundy" is commonly used for a deep red colour, distinct from the French "bordeaux" shade. Design tools assign "burgundy" the HEX code #800020 (RGB 128,0,32), whereas "bordeaux" refers to a browner, warmer tone. The colour name derives from the Burgundy region, a linguistic carry‑over that often causes confusion in fashion, graphic design and digital media.
