Linda Johnson-Bell of the Institute of Wine and Climate Change notes that this shortened cycle threatens the characteristic elegance and high acidity of the sparkling wine. Rising temperatures accelerate ripening and increase sugar levels, narrowing the window for producers to balance sugar, acidity, and phenolic maturity. In the Alpes-Maritimes region, producers report that successive heatwaves are forcing earlier harvests. Similarly, in California, the 2026 vintage is projected to be the earliest in a generation, with much of the harvest potentially completed before the end of September. By mid-August 2026, extreme heat and drought triggered the earliest Champagne grape harvest on record.
