Turkey school season: Rising costs and local aid programs

As the 2026-2027 academic year approaches in Turkey, families are facing rising costs for school essentials. School clothing prices have increased by 20% to 25%, with full outfits costing between 2,000 and 3,500 TL. Stationery and bag costs are also rising, leading many parents to seek budget-friendly options at discount markets like A101 or through online retailers.

To mitigate the financial burden, various municipalities and organizations are providing support. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) is launching its School Nutrition Support Card program, offering 2,500 TL monthly to eligible families alongside daily bread support. In Eskişehir, the Metropolitan Municipality is distributing free stationery sets to primary and middle school students. Additionally, Yeşilyurt Municipality is offering success awards of up to 20,000 TL to high-achieving YKS students.

Other community efforts include Ceyhan Municipality providing library and study resources, and the Umut Kervanı association distributing stationery packages in Van to needy students.
