While previous estimates placed a basic student kit at approximately 2,500 TL, new reports indicate that stationery expenses for a single student may now reach between 3,500 and 4,000 TL. Depending on brand and quality, comprehensive supply lists could potentially cost up to 9,000 TL.

The All Stationers Association (TÜKİD) maintains that the cost of filling a school bag has increased by 25.4% over the past year, reinforcing calls for a Value Added Tax (VAT) reduction on stationery to match exemptions for books. In the backpack market, retailers report prices ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 TL.

Regarding school attire, the Turkish Ministry of National Education has officially reintroduced mandatory school emblems (armas) on student uniforms. Published on July 22, this regulation aims to enhance security, discipline, and order. Mustafa Erçin, Vice President of the Turkey School Uniform Manufacturers and Sellers Federation (TOKÜSFED), stated that the previous policy of plain clothing caused “practical difficulties in the field.” Under the new rules, schools may select uniform models but cannot change them more than once every four years.

Economically, Erçin noted that purchasing ready-made uniforms with pre-sewn emblems is more cost-effective for parents. While buying plain clothing and paying for separate emblems and tailor services can add 200 to 250 TL in costs, the price difference for ready-made emblazoned items is often as low as 50 TL. The uniform manufacturing sector is reportedly nearly 90 percent prepared for the upcoming year using 100 percent domestic resources.

To mitigate rising expenses, local authorities in regions such as Kahramanmaraş are providing stationery support to low-income families, complementing existing initiatives like the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s School Nutrition Support Card.
