Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire Roll Out New Road Safety Enforcement Measures

Burkina Faso officially launched an e‑verbalisation system for traffic violations at midnight on 1 August 2026. Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana inspected the system twelve hours after activation, observing real‑time processing of infractions captured by cameras. In the first half‑day the system recorded 1,099 violations, including seat‑belt non‑use, red‑light running, speeding and handheld phone use, and five offenders paid fines through the FASO ARZEKA platform.

In Côte d’Ivoire, the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs held its sixth licence‑withdrawal commission on 30 July, suspending 22 driver licences (four with probation) and reinstating eight. The commission reviewed 41 cases linked to serious road accidents, notably a crash on the Touba‑Biankouma axis that caused 39 deaths and 45 injuries. Transport director Oumar Sacko and Minister Amadou Koné stressed stricter enforcement and public vigilance ahead of school holidays, urging parents to ensure their children do not drive without a licence and to respect road‑safety rules such as helmet use and traffic‑light compliance.
