Burkina Faso expands reforestation with community, corporate planting

In the town of Toécé, communal authorities officially launched a reforestation campaign on 30 July 2026, planting 200 trees – baobabs, Acacia nilotica and tamarinds – in the Koulpelé communal forest. The event was attended by Souleymane Wandaogo, head of the communal environment service, and Harouna Nana, president of the special delegation, who urged residents to help reach the campaign target of 2,500 trees.

On 1 August 2026, the private firm Hage Materials carried out a parallel planting effort on a three‑hectare green belt in Ouagadougou, inserting 300 seedlings of species such as tamarind, baobab, resin, mango, tangelo and kapok. CEO Joseph Hage said the activity is a “gift to future generations” and aims to combat desertification while providing fruit‑bearing trees for local farmers.

Both initiatives form part of Burkina Faso’s broader August reforestation drive, intended to restore vegetation cover, improve livelihoods and mitigate climate‑related land degradation.
