Burkina Faso reforestation initiatives

Overview

Burkina Faso has initiated several reforestation campaigns aimed at restoring vegetation cover and combating desertification. Early efforts in August 2026 included communal planting in Toécé and a private sector initiative by Hage Materials in Ouagadougou. The country subsequently expanded its scope through regional initiatives under the theme ‘One institution, one grove’, including projects at Nazi-Boni University, in Ioba province, and the Bindé commune.

By early September 2026, efforts in the Bougouriba/Dolo region saw the departmental Water and Forests service planting 150 trees at Gnonnan Kam departmental high school and the Saptan General Education College to compensate for vegetation lost during road construction. This operation involved support from teachers, students, parents, and local volunteers.

To support the national 2026-2027 reforestation efforts and the presidential initiative ‘L’heure patriotique pour reverdir le Faso’, the Centre de Formation Professionnelle aux Métiers Émergents Bangr Nooma (CFP-MEB) launched a plant sale running through September 30, 2026. The center is offering various species starting at 500 FCFA, including indigenous types like baobab and neem, and exotic species such as teak and flamboyant. CFP-MEB president Salif Nikiéma noted the center’s nursery holds over one million plants representing approximately 100 different species, with a specific focus on preserving threatened local species to protect regional biodiversity.
