Burkina Faso launches automated e‑verbalisation traffic enforcement

On 1 August 2026 the government of Burkina Faso activated an e‑verbalisation system that uses video‑surveillance radars to automatically issue traffic citations in the capital Ouagadougou and across the country. Within the first twelve hours the system recorded 1 099 infractions, the most frequent being failure to wear a seat belt, running red lights, speeding and using a mobile phone while driving.

Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana visited the Centre de supervision de la vidéoprotection with Director General Zakaria Hebie to observe the operation, describing the technology as a “tool for a safer road” and emphasizing its role in prevention rather than repression. Citizens interviewed by local media praised the measure, saying it encourages discipline and could save lives, while also calling for gradual implementation and strong public awareness campaigns.
