Burkina Faso pursues economic sovereignty through local industry and vocational education
Burkina Faso is implementing several initiatives aimed at fostering economic sovereignty and practical skill development. In Ouagadougou, the association Burkind Gouelé has launched the ‘Burkind venêm’ project. This pilot program, which began at Tampui 2 school, introduces vocational training such as wood and aluminum carpentry to primary school students to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional skills.
On a national scale, the government under Captain Ibrahim Traoré is pursuing a strategy of local industrial transformation. Rather than relying solely on foreign investment, the country is utilizing ‘popular shareholding’ through the Agency for the Promotion of Community Entrepreneurship. This mechanism converts national savings into industrial capital to fund projects like the tomato processing plant in Bobo-Dioulasso and the SOFATO project in Yako. The broader goal is to retain more value within the country by processing raw materials—such as gold, cotton, and cashews—locally instead of exporting them in their raw state.
