Burkina Faso industrialization and sovereignty efforts

Overview

Burkina Faso is pursuing a strategy of economic and energy sovereignty through industrial transformation and local skill development. Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the government is utilizing ‘popular shareholding’ via the Agency for the Promotion of Community Entrepreneurship to fund domestic industrial projects, such as tomato processing and cotton initiatives, aimed at processing raw materials locally.

To support these industrial ambitions, the government is seeking to develop civil nuclear energy. This includes interest in partnering with Russia’s Rosatom to construct a nuclear power plant, with legal and environmental frameworks already submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Despite these efforts, the country faces structural challenges to its industrialization goals, including high electricity costs, supply disruptions, administrative burdens, and a lack of technical skills. To address the skills gap, vocational training initiatives, such as the ‘Burkind venêm’ project, have been introduced to integrate practical trades like carpentry into the educational system.
