Burkina Faso pursues nuclear energy and industrialization
Burkina Faso is advancing plans to develop civil nuclear energy to achieve energy sovereignty and industrial growth. President Ibrahim Traoré has expressed a strong interest in partnering with Russia's Rosatom to construct a nuclear power plant, a request originally made during a visit to Russia in July 2023. The government has already developed legal and environmental texts, which have been submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for validation.
The project aims to impact various sectors, including industry, electricity, health, and agriculture. However, the nation faces significant hurdles in its broader industrialization efforts. Expert Joseph Ramdé notes that while there is political will to transform raw materials locally—such as cotton and tomatoes—the country struggles with high electricity costs, supply disruptions, administrative burdens, and a lack of technical skills. Addressing these energy and structural challenges remains critical for the success of the country's industrial ambitions.
