Burkina Faso security: equipment disparities and community surveillance

Burkina Faso faces a growing disparity in security resources between state protection units and frontline combatants. In Ouagadougou, elite guards have been observed with sophisticated individual equipment, including ballistic helmets, tactical vests, and modern communication systems. However, soldiers in rural areas such as Bourzanga, Gaoua, and Tawori face much harsher conditions while confronting armed groups that are increasingly utilizing advanced tactical capabilities, including long-distance shots and optical systems.

Complementing formal security efforts, community-based groups like the Koglweogo in the Tanghin district of Ouagadougou play an active role in local surveillance. These community members engage in daily patrols and manage local grievances, such as theft, often acting as a first line of defense and social regulation in peripheral urban neighborhoods.
