Milas Mayor Fevzi Topuz detained in corruption probe

Turkish authorities have detained Milas Mayor Fevzi Topuz and his son, Doruk Topuz, as part of a large-scale investigation into alleged corruption and bid rigging. The operation, coordinated by the Muğla Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, involved simultaneous raids across 13 provinces, resulting in the detention of 29 individuals out of 35 suspects.

The investigation focuses on allegations of bribery, forgery, and organized crime related to the issuance of false work experience certificates. Prosecutors claim the municipality approved credentials for construction work that was never actually performed. Expert reports indicate that 34 different companies submitted 35 fraudulent documents, leading to the approval of 33 certificates. Investigators found significant irregularities, including identical bank account numbers, tax IDs, and IBANs across different firms, as well as copied signatures and inconsistent financial records.

While the total value of the tenders associated with these disputed certificates is estimated at approximately 3.71 billion lira (roughly $75 million), the investigation is centered on the fraudulent procurement of credentials. Milas Municipality issued a statement claiming the investigation does not concern municipal tenders, asserting that the municipality had actually discovered the suspicious documents and filed a criminal complaint against the companies involved on March 30, 2026, prior to the police operation.
