Health officials issue warnings over seasonal mushroom poisoning risks

Health authorities in Turkey, including officials from Çanakkale, Bursa, and Kahramanmaraş, have issued urgent warnings regarding the increased risk of mushroom poisoning during the autumn season. Experts emphasize that poisonous mushrooms cannot be reliably identified by appearance, color, smell, or texture alone, and cooking does not neutralize their toxins.

Medical professionals note that symptoms vary depending on the species consumed. Some toxins cause immediate reactions within two hours, such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision. More dangerous cases may show no symptoms for several hours, with severe complications like liver and kidney failure appearing four to six days after consumption.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Aydın and Uzm. Dr. Mustafa Çetin advise that even a single misidentified mushroom can lead to organ failure or death. They recommend consuming only inspected, packaged mushrooms from markets and urge anyone suspecting poisoning to contact emergency services immediately.
