Wild mushroom season and safety warnings in Turkey
Overview
The arrival of autumn rains and cooling temperatures in Turkey has triggered an increase in mushroom growth across various regions. Early reports highlighted species such as kanlıca (Saffron milk cap), çıntar (Morel), and oyster mushrooms. In Bolu, rainfall led to the emergence of kanlıca, with prices initially reported between 500 and 600 lira per kilogram. By late October, heavy rainfall in Kastamonu caused a surge in supply, dropping kanlıca prices to as low as 50 lira per kilogram. In the Kozan district of Adana, residents reported one of the most productive seasons in nearly two decades, with market prices reaching 300 TL per kilogram.
As foraging activity increases, medical experts have issued heightened warnings regarding the fatal risks of consuming wild mushrooms. Mycology specialist Dr. Selime Semra Erol noted that edible and poisonous species can look remarkably similar, requiring careful evaluation of shape, texture, color, and growth location. She also noted the historical significance of Caesar's mushroom and the traditional medicinal uses of turkey tail mushrooms, while cautioning that the latter should not replace professional cancer treatments.
Professor Ahmet Aydın, Head of Pharmaceutical Toxicology at Yeditepe University, and Provincial Health Director Mustafa Çetin have warned that poisonous mushrooms can be indistinguishable from edible ones based on appearance, smell, or texture. They emphasized that cooking does not eliminate toxicity. Symptoms can manifest within two hours, including dizziness, nausea, and blurred vision, or may appear several hours to several days later, potentially leading to liver and kidney failure or death. Health officials in Çanakkale, Bursa, and Kahramanmaraş urge the public to consume only inspected, packaged mushrooms from markets.
