Bursa Nilüfer Council Protests Planned Solid Waste Facility

During its July meeting, the Nilüfer municipal council in Bursa faced strong opposition to a proposed solid‑waste plant slated for the Kayapa‑Kuruçeşme area. Mayor Şadi Özdemir, local muhtars and volunteers of the Nilüfer City Council demanded the project be reconsidered, displaying banners that read “Nilüfer’e Çöplük İstemiyoruz!” (“We don’t want a landfill in Nilüfer”) and “Geleceğimizi Çöpe Atmayacağız” (“We will not throw our future into trash”).

The officials warned that the facility could pollute water tables and harm agriculture across the whole district, not just the immediate neighbourhoods. They called on Bursa Metropolitan Municipality and the metropolitan council to review the decision, citing past environmental damage from similar installations.

The protest highlighted local concerns over environmental health, water resources and the preservation of Nilüfer’s natural landscape.
