Overview

Since late May 2026, Nilüfer municipality has focused on urban transformation, cultural programming, and environmental protection. Key initiatives include converting idle ornamental pools into community gardens and clearing a 1.75 km stretch of Nilüfer Creek in Hüdavendigar Park to improve hygiene. Cultural events have been central, including the second Nilüfer Karadeniz Festival, a Youth Festival, a Kite Festival in Gölyazı, and the 9th International Nilüfer Jazz Festival, which concluded in late June with a performance by Emel Mathlouthi.

Mayor Şadi Özdemir has promoted a multi-year tourism vision featuring a “Digital Village” in Ayvaköy, a floating dock, and aviation-and-nature sports facilities. However, the municipality faces significant opposition regarding a proposed solid-waste treatment plant on the Kayapa-Kuruçeşme border. In July, local muhtars, the Nilüfer City Council, and NGOs held protests and press briefings, arguing the site poses risks to water basins and air quality, stating, “We do not want a landfill in Nilüfer.”

To protect agricultural land and public health, municipal teams have conducted several demolition operations against illegal structures. In mid-July, crews razed an unauthorized recycling factory in Yaylacık and a building in Ürünlü. In August, further demolitions targeted a 600 m² warehouse in Büyükbalıklı and a 400 m² structure in Çatalağıl. The municipality continues community outreach through the “Şadi Başkan’la Akşam Çayı” meetings and the “Nilüfer Her Yerde” mobile app.
