Buru Island renewable energy development accelerated by Indonesia

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is accelerating the development of new and renewable energy (EBT) on Buru Island, Maluku Province. This initiative aims to strengthen clean energy supply reliability and support local economic growth, as outlined in the 2025-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

Key projects include the Wapsalit geothermal field with a 20 MW capacity, targeted for commercial operation by 2028. This project is expected to support green mining operations and provide power for cold storage facilities to preserve fishery and agricultural products.

Other planned developments include the Way Tina hydroelectric power plant (12 MW) with a 2030 target, the Wae Mala micro-hydro plant (1.1 MW) by 2029, and a 5 MW solar power plant equipped with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Namlea. These efforts are intended to reduce the island's dependence on fossil fuels and boost community welfare.
