Overview

By late 2026, Indonesia’s energy transition has intensified, centered on President Prabowo Subianto’s ambitious 100 GWp solar target. To achieve this, the government is exploring regulatory shifts to allow direct appointments of capable companies to bypass lengthy tenders. To address a daily oil import deficit of approximately 1 million barrels, the government is integrating 7 GW of nuclear power into the National General Energy Plan (RUEN) as a stable baseload source. Feasibility studies for nuclear plants are underway in the Riau Islands, Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Halmahera. Recent developments include considerations for a 200 MW floating nuclear power plant project in North Halmahera.

Diversification efforts include exploring natural hydrogen, developing Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) from coal, and advancing biomethane production from palm oil waste. Pertamina Patra Niaga has begun producing 11 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at the Cilacap Green Refinery using used cooking oil. Furthermore, Agrinas Palma Nusantara is collaborating with Pertamina subsidiaries to develop bioenergy from palm oil, including potential Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) production in Riau.

In the oil and gas sector, the US$22 billion Abadi Masela LNG project has completed its Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase ahead of schedule. Pertamina has also identified significant potential at the Padang Pancuran well in South Sumatra and is developing an unconventional ecosystem in the Rokan Block, Riau. Meanwhile, approximately 1,600 PLN workers have called for an evaluation of the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).
