Bus accident in Petrópolis leaves ten dead
A bus operated by Viação Estrela Guia Turismo overturned on the BR-040 highway near Petrópolis, resulting in ten fatalities, all of whom were female. The vehicle was traveling from Belo Horizonte toward Copacabana with 48 passengers and a driver on board.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Forensic analysis of the vehicle's tachograph is expected to reveal the speed at the time of the collision, while other investigations aim to identify potential mechanical failures. Witnesses reported that the bus was traveling at high speeds through curves before losing control.
The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has classified the bus service as illegal, noting that the vehicle lacked authorization for interstate travel. The Civil Police are investigating the incident, noting that no registered company was found under the name of the tourism agency provided. Seven people remain hospitalized, including the driver, who is undergoing surgery.
