Fatal bus accident in Petrópolis

Overview

A tourist bus overturned on the BR-040 highway in the mountainous region of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, resulting in at least ten fatalities, all of whom were women. The vehicle, operated by Estrela Guia Turismo, was traveling from Belo Horizonte toward Copacabana with 48 passengers and a driver on board.

Investigations by the Civil Police are focused on determining whether the crash was caused by mechanical failure or excessive speed. Witnesses reported the bus was traveling at high speeds through curves before losing control.

Forensic analysis of the vehicle’s tachograph is expected to clarify the speed at the time of the accident. The driver survived the crash with fractures and has undergone surgery, while several passengers remained hospitalized.
