Petrópolis bus accident kills 10 and leaves dozens injured

A tourist bus overturned on the BR-040 highway in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, resulting in at least 10 deaths and dozens of injuries. The accident occurred around 4:30 AM near kilometer 91 in the mountainous region. All confirmed fatalities were women, including a seven-year-old girl and a pregnant woman.

The vehicle, operated by Estrela Guia Turismo, was traveling from Belo Horizonte to Copacabana. The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has classified the trip as clandestine, stating that the bus and the associated companies were not authorized for interstate passenger transport.

Emergency responders, including the Fire Department and SAMU, treated numerous victims. While some passengers were taken to hospitals in Petrópolis and Duque de Caxias, others were transported to Rio de Janeiro. The bus driver survived the crash with fractures to both legs. Civil Police are investigating whether mechanical failure or excessive speed caused the vehicle to lose control on the mountain curves.
