Busan aims to drive industrial innovation through energy transition
Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-su has announced a strategic vision to transform the city into a hub for future energy and a leading maritime capital. The administration aims to drive industrial innovation and job creation through a transition to renewable energy, the establishment of a hydrogen industry ecosystem, and the implementation of distributed energy networks.
Key energy initiatives include the development of a smart grid in Gangseo to build a 500MWh ESS Farm and the promotion of private-sector distributed power models near the Kijang nuclear power plant. To support the hydrogen sector, the city is fostering cooperation networks among local companies, training specialized personnel through university partnerships, and expanding hydrogen mobility and charging infrastructure.
To complete Busan’s status as a maritime capital, the city is pursuing a roadmap that includes the relocation of maritime public institutions, the 2028 opening of the Busan International Maritime Commercial Court, and the settlement of major shipping companies like HMM. The goal is to integrate administrative, judicial, corporate, and financial functions to lead the emerging Arctic shipping route era.
