Busan urban, maritime, and energy development initiatives
Overview
Busan is pursuing various urban development, industrial modernization, and cultural initiatives. The city is restructuring industrial complexes in the West Busan region and transforming production zones into ‘Culture-Leading Industrial Complexes’. International engagement has intensified through the ‘2026 Busan Global City Week’ and the ‘Busan Port Declaration 2026: Global Port Innovation Pact’ to enhance supply chain resilience. In October 2026, the city launched the ‘Festival October’ brand, integrating 22 events across music, film, arts, and business. To bolster tourism, the city introduced the ‘Visit Busan Mate’ program and hosted the 2nd Global City Tourism Summit in the Haeundae district. Held from October 26 to 28, the summit involves representatives from 31 cities across 16 countries and focuses on ‘Local Tourism: Connecting Urban Economy and Tourism Innovation’ and the ‘2040 Sustainable City Tourism Common Vision’ to ensure tourism benefits local communities. Complementing these efforts, the city is hosting the Global Gastronomy Forum 2026 at the Park Hyatt Busan. Approximately 200 culinary experts and chefs are exploring the theme ‘The Great Shift in Gastronomy: Why Local’ to discuss the role of regional ingredients in global food culture. These initiatives follow a successful one-year partnership with the digital platform Agoda, which contributed to Busan welcoming approximately 3.43 million international visitors through August 2026 and saw a 77% increase in city searches during recent campaign periods. Urban redevelopment remains a central pillar, particularly the North Port district. The Busan Port Authority is utilizing a Master Architect system to transform the area into a citizen-centered maritime landmark. This aligns with a 35.5 trillion KRW development roadmap, ‘Center of Future Transformation, Maritime Capital Busan’, which includes the opening of Gadeokdo New Airport and the establishment of maritime AI and power semiconductor clusters. Recent efforts have expanded into architectural and housing discussions.
