South Korean regions pursue educational innovation and equity

Regional authorities and educational institutions in South Korea are pursuing various initiatives to address educational disparities and regional decline. In Busan, the municipal government, the Office of Education, and 16 regional organizations have signed an agreement to apply for the Ministry of Education’s ‘Education Innovation Leading Region’ project. This initiative aims to create customized educational models to combat population decline and improve regional stability. If selected, the project could receive up to 40 billion won in annual support for five years.

In Ongjin County, the local government and the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education have partnered to reduce educational gaps in island areas. Their cooperation focuses on creating tailored educational environments and expanding opportunities, such as foreign language programs, for students in geographically isolated regions.

Meanwhile, Jeju Province, the Jeju Provincial Council, and Jeju National University have issued a joint protest following the university’s exclusion from the government’s ‘Make 10 Seoul National Universities’ package support project. The three entities are demanding that the Ministry of Education disclose its evaluation criteria and procedures. They argue that the current selection process fails to account for the unique geographical and industrial characteristics of island regions like Jeju, potentially widening the gap between regional universities.
