South Korean regional educational reform initiatives
Overview
Regional authorities in South Korea are implementing various initiatives to address educational disparities and promote regional stability through innovation.
In Busan, local government and educational organizations have applied for the Ministry of Education’s ‘Education Innovation Leading Region’ project to create customized educational models. Similarly, Ongjin County has partnered with the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education to reduce educational gaps in isolated island areas. However, in Jeju Province, local leaders have protested the exclusion of Jeju National University from a government support package, demanding transparency regarding evaluation criteria that they claim ignores the unique needs of island regions.
Furthering these reform efforts, the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education announced the ‘Daejeon IB Education District’ project, which aims to implement International Baccalaureate principles across the region by 2030. In Daegu, local government and education offices have also applied for ‘Education Innovation Leading Region’ status to build a local ecosystem that encourages talent retention through cooperation between schools, universities, and industries.
