Business Council of Alberta urges voters to remain in Canada

The Business Council of Alberta is urging voters to remain part of Canada ahead of the October 19 secession referendum. The council, which represents more than 130 executives from various sectors, warns that a successful vote for separation would create massive economic uncertainty and risk jobs.

Adam Legge, president of the council, stated that the idea of a separate Alberta being ‘master of its own destiny’ is a ‘fiction,’ noting that critical factors such as trade agreements, market access, currency, and interest rates remain largely outside the province's control. While many members, particularly in the resource sector, have expressed frustration with federal policy, Legge noted that individual companies often hesitate to speak out publicly to avoid workplace tension or alienating customers.

The upcoming referendum will ask Albertans whether to remain a province or initiate a second, binding vote on separation. The Business Council of Alberta has launched a new website and multimedia campaign to advocate for remaining in Canada, joining other groups like the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in opposing secession.
