Gerhard Zeiler challenges Andreas Babler for SPÖ leadership

Gerhard Zeiler, the current President International of Warner Bros. Discovery, has officially announced his intention to challenge Andreas Babler for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Zeiler aims to secure both the party chairmanship and the position of Vice Chancellor.

Zeiler describes himself as a ‘classic Social Democrat’ rather than a ‘class warrior’ or ‘Marxist,’ advocating for a more business-friendly course to ensure the long-term financing of the welfare state. His stated priorities include combating inflation, reducing the cost of living, and increasing investment in education and healthcare. He has also suggested that the party could potentially continue its current coalition with the ÖVP and NEOS.

The move has caused significant friction within the SPÖ. While some regional party leaders in states like Styria, Carinthia, and Salzburg are reportedly coordinating to facilitate a special party convention to elect Zeiler, other high-ranking officials have expressed opposition. SPÖ General Secretary Klaus Seltenheim described Zeiler’s approach as ‘negligent,’ and current leader Andreas Babler has refused to step down, citing his recent reelection. Several ministers and parliamentary club leaders, including Philip Kucher and Markus Marterbauer, have publicly backed Babler.
