Butter purchasing guide for German consumers

Consumers in Germany are advised to look beyond price and marketing terms like ‘Alpenbutter’ when purchasing butter. While prices for 250-gram packs fluctuate significantly, price does not always correlate with quality. Product tests show that private labels from discounters and supermarkets frequently perform well, whereas expensive brand-name products often only achieve mid-range results.

Official standards dictate that ‘Deutsche Markenbutter’ must score at least four out of five points in all categories during testing, while ‘Deutsche Molkereibutter’ requires at least three. Other classifications include ‘Landbutter’, which is produced directly on farms and may consist of raw milk. Fat content also varies, with ‘Dreiviertelfettbutter’ containing 60 to 62 percent milk fat and ‘Halbfettbutter’ containing 39 to 41 percent.

Retailers are also accused by consumer advocates of using butter as a loss leader to attract customers to stores.
