Germany prepares for 2027 retirement reform and new savings depots

Germany is undergoing significant shifts in its retirement landscape. Starting in 2027, a new state-subsidized retirement savings depot (Altersvorsorgedepot) will be introduced, offering annual subsidies of up to 540 euros. Major players are already positioning themselves: Telekom Finance is launching 'Magenta Finance' in collaboration with fintech Xaver, while neobroker Scalable Capital has announced plans for a standard depot without custody fees.

The Bundesverband Deutscher Versicherungskaufleute (BVK) has issued warnings regarding these reforms, specifically advocating for mandatory personal consultation when consumers transfer existing Riester contracts to the new standard depots. The BVK cites an Allianz study showing that 75 percent of Riester savers desire professional guidance, and 58 percent prefer personal consultation for such transitions.

Additional pension-related developments include the 'Aktivrente' policy, effective January 1, 2026, which allows retirees to earn up to 2,000 euros per month tax-free. However, recent data from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung highlights economic challenges, noting that 77.9 percent of new full disability pensions in 2025 were below 1,500 euros per month.
