BYD and Sinopec convert Shanghai fuel station into 1,500kW EV charging hub

BYD and Sinopec have completed the first full conversion of a traditional fuel station into a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) Flash Charging hub in Shanghai. The site has replaced fuel pumps with 12 BYD Flash charging stalls, maintaining a drive-in, drive-out configuration similar to a standard petrol station.

The hub utilizes megawatt-level charging technology capable of delivering up to 1,500kW. For compatible vehicles, such as those equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade batteries, this allows for a charge from 10% to 70% in approximately five minutes. To manage the high power demand without straining the electrical grid, the underground fuel storage tanks have been replaced with battery storage systems.

This project is part of a broader partnership announced in June 2024. The collaboration aims to roll out Flash chargers across Sinopec’s network of more than 30,000 fuel sites, supporting BYD’s goal of deploying 20,000 Flash chargers across China by the end of 2026.
