BYD expands Brazilian production with localized flex-fuel hybrid plans

BYD is expanding its industrial footprint in Brazil through its manufacturing complex in Camaçari, Bahia. Following a R$ 3 billion investment in the former Ford facility, the plant serves as the company’s first production hub outside of Asia, with an annual capacity of 150,000 units that could eventually reach 300,000. The facility is intended to supply both the Brazilian domestic market and various Latin American countries.

A key component of BYD’s regional strategy is the development of flex-fuel technology for its plug-in hybrid vehicles, supported by a dedicated Research and Development center. As part of this localized approach, the company is developing the BYD Mako, a pickup truck designed specifically for the Brazilian market. Scheduled for production in Camaçari starting in late 2026, the Mako is expected to be the country’s first plug-in hybrid flex (PHEV) pickup. The model is anticipated to feature a combined power output of approximately 219 cv, utilizing a 1.5L engine paired with an electric motor.
