China's NEV market hits record high as manufacturers expand exports

China’s automotive market is undergoing a massive shift toward electrification. In August, new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached a record 60.6 percent share of monthly new car sales. While overall retail sales in China slumped, manufacturers are aggressively pushing exports to avoid a fierce domestic price war. BYD remains a dominant force, capturing 35.4 percent of China’s NEV export market in August and seeing significant growth in Southeast Asian markets like Indonesia and the Philippines.

In Indonesia, BYD has secured a 37 percent market share of the national EV segment through August 2026. Similarly, in the Philippines, BYD’s sales have already surpassed its 2025 full-year record.

While BYD expands, other players are seeing mixed results. Geely has made a significant jump in export rankings, while Tesla’s share of China’s NEV exports fell to 7 percent in August. The rapid growth in NEV exports—which accounted for over 50 percent of China’s total auto exports for three consecutive months—signals a fundamental shift in the country’s automotive export structure toward electrification technology.
