Global automotive debuts and BYD's global expansion
Overview
Automotive manufacturers continue to utilize international auto shows to debut new models, such as Suzuki’s XL7 and Mitsubishi’s Xpander updates at GIIAS, and BMW’s AI-equipped X3 at Chengdu. BYD remains a central figure in this global expansion, targeting international sales of 1.9 to 2.0 million vehicles in 2026 and exceeding 2.5 million by 2027. To mitigate trade barriers and EU tariffs, BYD is pursuing a regional production network in Europe, having commenced trial production at its first plant in Szeged, Hungary. Former Foreign and Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó has characterized the construction of this factory as a “major success for Hungary,” defending government subsidies as being within the “standard range for investments of this magnitude.” BYD is diversifying its regional product offerings through several key markets. In Ireland, Motor Distributors Limited has introduced the ATTO 2 Super Hybrid, which utilizes Super DM technology to offer a combined WLTP range of up to 1,000km, alongside the all-electric ATTO 3 EVO featuring an updated e-Platform 3.0. In Brazil, the electric SUV market is seeing intensified competition. The BYD Yuan Plus is competing against the Volvo EX30 Cross Country; newer 2027 BYD iterations feature an all-wheel-drive configuration producing 449 cv and 57.1 kgfm of torque, while the Volvo model provides 428 cv and 55.4 kgfm of torque. Both models achieved a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 4.2 seconds in performance testing. Further expansion includes the Racco, a compact electric vehicle designed to meet Japanese Kei car standards. Following initial interest in Japan, the right-hand drive Racco is now slated for sale in Sri Lanka and Macau, offering battery options with a WLTC range of 210 km or 320 km.
