Chinese automakers expand global footprint with EV and hybrid growth
Chinese automotive manufacturers are significantly expanding their presence in Latin American and Australian markets, driven by a surge in electric and hybrid vehicle demand. In Brazil, Chinese brands reached a 23% market share in July 2026, with new players like IM Motors, Dongfeng, and Lepas expected to enter the market between 2026 and 2029. BYD is actively diversifying its Brazilian portfolio, launching the Song Pro Flex—a plug-in hybrid capable of running on ethanol, gasoline, or electricity—and exploring the commercial sector with the potential introduction of the T35 light electric truck.
In Argentina, BYD has initiated the pre-sale of the Seal 5 DM-i, its first sedan in the country, which offers a combined range of up to 1,360 km. Meanwhile, in Australia, BYD is challenging Tesla's dominance; search interest for the BYD Sealion 7 has surpassed the Tesla Model Y, reflecting a rapid rise in consumer interest for Chinese EV brands.
Other manufacturers are also adjusting to these shifts. Hyundai is marketing its 2027 i20 line in Brazil, while Geely continues to be a notable player in the regional electric vehicle landscape.
