Geely-BYD competition intensifies in Brazil EV market
Overview
By August 2026, Chinese manufacturers significantly expanded their influence across Latin America. In Brazil, EV and hybrid sales grew by over 120% between January and July 2026 compared to the previous year, with electric models accounting for 23.5% of all light vehicle sales in July. Chinese brands reached a 23% market share in Brazil during that month, with new players such as IM Motors, Dongfeng, and Lepas expected to enter the market between 2026 and 2029. BYD remains a dominant player via the Dolphin and Dolphin Mini, while Geely’s EX2 continues to appear as a top seller in several states. BYD is also diversifying its Brazilian portfolio beyond passenger cars, having registered the T35 light electric truck for urban logistics and launched the BC12HF electric chassis for public transport. To capture the SUV market, the company has introduced the Song Pro Super-Híbrido Flex Fuel, a mid-size SUV utilizing a fifth-generation DM-i system adapted for gasoline and ethanol. Competition in the Brazilian SUV segment has intensified with new high-performance entries. Volvo introduced the EX30 Twin Motor Performance, an all-wheel-drive model priced at R$ 309,950. Simultaneously, BYD launched the Sealion 7 in Brazil for R$ 339,990, which the company positions as its most powerful electric SUV in the country, delivering 531 cv. This activity aligns with rapid electrification in specific regions, such as Rio Grande do Norte, where light electrified vehicle sales rose by over 242% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. This expansion extends to Argentina, where BYD has initiated the pre-sale of the Seal 5 DM-i, its first sedan in the country, which offers a combined range of up to 1,360 km.
