BYD gains significant market share in Australia's EV sector
The Chinese carmaker BYD is significantly impacting the Australian automotive market. Following disruptions in global oil markets caused by the Iran-US military conflict, Australia has seen a surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption. In the first half of 2026, EVs accounted for 25.8 per cent of total car sales in the country.
BYD, which began as a battery manufacturer founded by Wang Chuanfu in 1995, has transitioned from supplying lithium-ion batteries to major tech firms like Motorola and Nokia to becoming a dominant player in the EV sector. The company entered the automotive industry in 2003 and has since grown to outsell many established competitors in Australia.
