BYD plant expansion and global sales surge

Overview

In July 2026 BYD’s overseas momentum accelerated further. In Mexico the Chinese car share rose to 11.5% of the market, with BYD delivering 33,969 electrified units – about 40% of all hybrid and electric sales – as Chinese brands captured over 15% of the light‑vehicle segment. In France, BYD sold 13,935 vehicles in the first half of the year, reaching a 2.7% market share; most of this volume came from rental‑fleet customers, with private‑buyer sales limited to 40% of the total. The company also dealt with an administrative error in Australia, where 2025‑model cars were mistakenly labeled as 2026 models, prompting partial or full refunds to affected buyers.

BYD now says it can become the world’s largest vehicle producer within five years, even without access to the United States market. It sold 4.5 million cars last year, well below Toyota’s 10.5 million, but expects organic growth and aggressive expansion in Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America. European market share rose to 2.8% in May, roughly double the previous year, and the French first‑half 2026 sales nearly matched the full‑year 2025 volume. About 40% of European sales remain short‑term rentals, but BYD expects broader consumer uptake as new models and fast‑charging infrastructure roll out.

In Mexico BYD accounted for roughly four of every ten electrified vehicles sold, delivering 95,000 hybrid and electric units in the first half of 2026, of which 35,000 were BYD models. Chinese brands now hold the third‑largest origin share in the Mexican market. Global exports grew, with 175,000 cars shipped abroad in June 2026. Executives stress that the U.S. ban, driven by high tariffs and software restrictions, will not hinder the long‑term goal of overtaking Toyota.
