BYD opens Rp16 trillion EV manufacturing plant in Subang, Indonesia

BYD has officially inaugurated its new manufacturing facility in Subang, West Java, marking a significant shift from importing vehicles to local production in Indonesia. The facility, built on 126 hectares with an investment of approximately Rp16 trillion, has a maximum production capacity of 150,000 units per year. Currently, the plant employs 5,000 local workers, a figure expected to rise to 20,000 once operations reach full capacity.

To support the growth of the domestic electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry is developing a new incentive scheme tied to Local Content Requirements (TKDN). Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that higher local content will lead to greater government support. The government's roadmap sets minimum TKDN targets of 40% for 2026, 60% for 2027-2029, and 80% by 2030.

In alignment with these goals, BYD plans to expand its local footprint by investing in battery manufacturing and assembly, aiming to achieve a 60% TKDN by 2027. Additionally, BYD is fulfilling production obligations related to previous import incentives; the company has utilized 92,000 of its 100,000 unit CBU import quota, necessitating the local production of at least 92,000 units.
